Confirmation

What Is Confirmation?

If you're new to the Episcopal Church, you may have heard the term confirmation and wondered what it means. At its heart, confirmation is a beautiful, meaningful step in your spiritual journey—a public way to say “Yes” to God and to the life of faith you are growing into.

A Mature Affirmation of Faith

The sacrament of confirmation is the means by which a baptized Christian makes a mature, public affirmation of their faith. While baptism marks the beginning of life in Christ, confirmation is about stepping forward to claim that faith as your own. It’s not about having all the answers—it’s about being ready to keep growing, keep learning, and keep walking in love.

The Role of the Bishop

One of the most ancient and meaningful parts of this sacrament is the laying on of hands by a bishop. This gesture, going all the way back to the early Church, is a sign of blessing, unity, and the ongoing presence of the Holy Spirit in your life. It’s the bishop’s way of saying, “We see the Spirit at work in you—and we’re with you.”

Who Can Be Confirmed?

Anyone who has been baptized—whether in the Episcopal Church or another Christian tradition—is welcome to prepare for confirmation. We recognize that the Spirit moves in many places and in many ways. You don’t need to be baptized “Episcopal” to be confirmed Episcopal.

How Do I Prepare?

We believe that faith formation is a journey, not a box to check. That’s why we offer age-appropriate preparation—typically on Sunday mornings—over the course of a year or two. These classes are designed to help you ask questions, explore Scripture and tradition, and discern your next steps in faith. Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, there’s a place for you in this journey.

When Does It Happen?

Confirmation usually takes place once a year, during the annual visitation of our Diocesan Bishop. It’s a special and joyful celebration that connects our local church to the wider Episcopal tradition.
