Adult Formation & Learning

Upcoming Events

At St. Peter's, we value and understand that each of our parishioners--children, youth, or adults--is at a unique place in their spiritual life and are supporting each other in our vision to grow in discipleship.

Growing in discipleship means having opportunities to know the teachings of Jesus Christ. We value providing numerous learning opportunities supporting our individual spiritual journeys as we discover how we are called to be disciples. Our goal is for every member of our church might find a way to enhance his/her/their spiritual journey, thus building a stronger foundation for their faith.

Join us at St. Peter's as we engage our Great Commission to be disciples making disciples for Jesus Christ.

Women’s Bible Study

  • Women's Bible studies are a great opportunity to connect with women of St. Peter’s as we study God’s word together. Side by side we learn more of who God is, encouraging one another in the everyday challenges we face and how to apply this to our life choices, actions and attitudes.

  • Wednesdays from 10:00am-11:30am in the St. Peter’s Library (led by Pat Van Gorder).

Thursdays from 1:00pm-2:30pm in the St. Peter’s Library (led by Connie Hays).

Education for Ministry

  • Affectionately known as EfM, is a program of the School of Theology at the University of the South. This is a four-year program for lay leaders where students sign up one year at a time. Meeting once a week over nine months, seminars are guided by trained mentors. EfM covers the basics of a theological education in the Old and New Testaments, church history, liturgy, and theology.

Course materials provide substantial academic content with the focus on life as ministry and understanding that ministry. EfM provides the basic skill which is the foundation of all Christian ministry -- theological reflection. The goal is learning to think theologically. By examining our own beliefs and their relationship to our culture and the tradition of our Christian faith, we can learn what it means to be effective ministers in the world.

  • What can you expect from EfM?
You will find that EfM teaches you how to think theologically, deepens your faith and your understanding of our Christian heritage, and provides you with a new confidence to be Christ's minister

    Who should join EfM?
If you feel called to do any of the things listed in the section "What Can You Expect from EfM", check out the EfM web page and talk to a St. Peter's EfM mentor. A new class begins each September.

  • For more information, contact the church office and we’ll connect you to the EfM coordinator.

Spiritual Community

  • Centering Prayer

Centering Prayer is a form of meditation that originated with the early Christian mothers and fathers and developed through the Middle Ages. It continues the contemplative tradition of silent prayer and is rooted in Jesus' teaching: "When you pray, go into your secret room and close the door. And your father, who sees in secret, will hear you" (Matthew 6:6).

We meet every Tuesday at 9am via Zoom. Contact the office to register and receive the Zoom link.

Our Centering Prayer group is affiliated with the national organization of Contemplative Outreach.

  • Cursillo

Cursillo is a three day weekend retreat sponsored by the diocese and the Episcopal Church for men and women, clergy and lay. The purpose of the movement is to help disciples grow in their spiritual life and deepen their understanding of the apostolic life to serve Christ and his Church. The retreat weekend is followed up by weekly prayer and support groups called reunion groups.

Please contact the office for more information.

  • Daughters of the King

We have made a commitment to Jesus as our Savior, and we follow Him as Lord of our lives. We are an Order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church, churches in communion with it, or churches in the Historic Episcopate. Today our membership includes women in the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA) and Roman Catholic churches.

Racial Reconciliation

Widespread hostility to immigrants from Latin America has led to the deportation of millions and ripped families apart. Structural poverty in indigenous communities has led to alarming youth suicides.Throughout Latin America, indigenous and Afro-Latino peoples still suffer after centuries of systematic devaluation. Videos regularly detail the detention and killing of unarmed black men, women, and children by the state. Across the United States and Europe, people from the Middle East are profiled as terrorists and enemies of Western values. And human trafficking enslaves the most vulnerable in Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

Given these realities and given the call of the gospel of Jesus Christ, St. Peter's has discerned a fresh commitment to racial justice, reconciliation, and healing. We facilitate the Episcopal curriculum, Sacred Ground, to help people learn more about race and faith in the United States. It's a 10-session course that uses films and readings to explore our North American history in all its fullness.

"We made a commitment to live into being the Jesus Movement by committing to evangelism and the work of reconciliation – beginning with racial reconciliation across the borders and boundaries that divide the human family of God. This is difficult work. But we can do it. It’s about listening and sharing. It’s about God." - The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church
