Reception at St. Peter’s
A Pathway into Full Membership for Christians from Other Traditions
If you’ve been confirmed in another Christian denomination—such as Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or some Lutheran traditions—you may be wondering how to become a full member of the Episcopal Church. The good news is that the Episcopal Church recognizes your confirmation and welcomes you through a sacred rite called Reception.
Reception is a way to affirm your faith, celebrate your journey, and officially join the Episcopal Church without being confirmed again. It’s both deeply personal and joyfully communal, marking your decision to call the Episcopal Church your spiritual home.
What is Reception?
Reception is the means by which a baptized Christian, who has already been confirmed by a bishop in another denomination, is publicly welcomed into the Episcopal Church. During the service, the Diocesan bishop places hands upon you and prays for the Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide you in your new church home.
It’s a recognition of the faith you’ve already lived, and a joyful embrace into the Episcopal Church community.
Who Can Be Received?
Reception is right for you if:
You were confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Church, or some Lutheran churches with apostolic succession.
You feel called to live out your Christian faith as part of the Episcopal Church.
You desire to take on the rights and responsibilities of full Episcopal membership, such as serving in leadership roles and voting in parish life.
What the Process is Like
Reception usually takes place during a service when the bishop visits the parish. Here’s what you can expect:
Preparation and Formation – Before the ceremony takes place, you’ll take part in classes or conversations that help you explore Episcopal tradition, liturgy, and theology.
The Rite of Reception – During the liturgy, you’ll come forward. The bishop will lay hands on you, pray for the Spirit’s guidance, and officially receive you into the Episcopal Church.
Celebration with the Congregation – Following the service, you’ll be welcomed and celebrated as a full member of the Episcopal Church.
