Reception
What is Reception in the Episcopal Church?
If you're new to the Episcopal Church and have been confirmed in another Christian tradition—perhaps Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or Lutheran—you might be wondering what your path into the Episcopal Church looks like. The good news is that there's a time-honored and meaningful way to become a full member of the Episcopal Church without being re-confirmed: it's called Reception.
So, What Is Reception?
Reception is the Episcopal Church’s way of recognizing and honoring your faith journey. If you’ve already been confirmed in a denomination with historic apostolic succession (that is, a church that traces its leadership and sacramental life back to the early church), the Episcopal Church does not require you to be confirmed again.
Instead, you’re received—a sacred rite in which the bishop lays hands on you and formally welcomes you into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church. It’s a powerful and personal moment of affirmation, both of your existing faith and of your new spiritual home.
Why Reception Matters
Reception isn't just a formality. It’s an acknowledgment of your Christian maturity and the faith you’ve already lived and practiced. It also marks your desire to continue growing in faith as part of the Episcopal branch of the Christian church—a branch that values scripture, tradition, and reason, and emphasizes love, inclusion, and service.
For many, Reception is also an emotional moment. It can feel like a homecoming—an embrace from a community that sees your past, honors your present, and walks with you into your future.
Who Is Reception For?
Reception is offered to:
Individuals who have been confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, or some Lutheran traditions (where bishops in apostolic succession perform confirmation)
Those who feel called to make the Episcopal Church their spiritual home
People seeking to be recognized as full members, including the ability to vote in parish elections and serve in various leadership roles
What Happens in the Service?
During the liturgy—typically when the bishop visits—the individual being received comes forward. The bishop lays hands on their head and says a special prayer, affirming their faith and formally welcoming them into the Episcopal Church. The service may look similar to Confirmation, and often both rites happen side by side.
Preparing for Reception
At St. Peter’s and in most Episcopal churches, individuals preparing for Reception participate in a season of formation and learning. This might be a class or discussion group exploring the Episcopal Church’s history, beliefs, and practices. It’s a time to ask questions, build relationships, and deepen your faith as you take this step.
Whether you're arriving from another denomination or returning to the church after a time away, Reception is a beautiful way to say “yes” to God’s call in your life and to be embraced by a new church family.
