Our Worship
SUNDAYS
All regular worship services at St. Peter’s are services of Holy Eucharist (meaning Thanksgiving), which is a form of liturgy (worship) handed down through the ages in the Church and is a service celebrated in two primary and equal parts: the first part is the Ministry of the Word which includes praise and adoration of God, readings from Holy Scripture (the Bible) followed by a full sermon, recitation of our beliefs (The Creed), prayers and intercessions for ourselves and others, the confession of our sins, the assurance of God’s forgiveness and sharing in the Peace of God. The second part of the service is the Ministry of the Sacraments or Holy Communion, where we remember in liturgical forms not only the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, but also his life laid down for the world in his Crucifixion, and the Glory of his Resurrection. We participate in this by receiving Holy Communion, the Bread and the Wine as Jesus shared with the apostles, in which we believe Christ conveys to us his Real and abiding Presence. Following that we give thanks for the great gift we have received and hear the call of God for us to go out into the world to serve in Christ’s Name. At the conclusion of most services, we have healing prayer teams available to pray with anyone in need.
Preceding and following each worship service is a time of fellowship on our central patio with coffee and fresh VG’s donuts. Our Sunday School hour is from 10 to 11 AM. Our children are the first to receive Holy Communion at our 9 AM service and with their teachers, they go to their classes. Those children who normally attend our 11 AM service go to worship after Sunday School. Nearly every Sunday, we have an Adult Forum in our Parish Hall covering a variety of topics. Periodically we also have concerts during this time.
All children are welcome and encouraged to attend worship with their parents. However, should parents choose to utilize our nursery, it is available from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM for children five and under. Our Nursery is staffed by child care professionals.
7:45 am traditional worship
Our first worship service Sunday morning uses a traditional rite of liturgy, employing more historic forms of language, i.e., “thee’s” and “thou’s”, etc.. We call it Rite 1. Early risers of all ages attend this service and enjoy the beauty of the words and the quiet and gentle nature of the service. This service has no music except for an organ voluntary after the worship. The service is about 45 minutes in length.
9:00 am contemporary family worship
Our second worship service on Sunday mornings employs a more contemporary and upbeat form of liturgy, in style and language and music. This is normally our largest service and attendees spread across the full range of our population, from infants to super-seniors. While children are welcome at all our worship services, this service is especially designed to be child and family friendly, and is planned to meet the needs of children and adults, alike, as well as being accessible by all. There are design elements particularly for children, including sermon time, and the children experience a great amount of freedom in and ownership of this service. For more information, please see Children in Worship.
The music for this service varies weekly. On two or three Sundays a month, the music is a combination of both traditional and contemporary music accompanied on both piano and pipe organ and leadership provided by our St. Nicholas Choristers (children’s and youth choir) or by our staff section leaders. In addition, portions of the liturgy are normally chanted. The other two Sundays a month, the music is provided by our band, “A Joyful Noise”, which uses a combination of guitars, bass, keyboard, flute, drums and vocals and leads us using a wide array of contemporary Christian music for our hymns and liturgical music. This service is normally about an hour and fifteen minutes in length.
11:00 am contemporary choral worship
Our final worship service at the church on Sunday mornings also uses our contemporary language liturgy which is joined with music from our rich heritage of traditional church music. All music is accompanied on our 27 rank Moeller pipe organ and music leadership is provided by our parish choir. While this service also meets the needs of every age group in our parish, and is very friendly to children, it does not have the specific child-friendly design elements that are contained in the 9 AM service. We utilize both traditional and contemporary forms of chant throughout the service. This service is normally a little more than an hour in length.
11:30 am holy eucharist at la vida del mar
Every Sunday, lay and clergy members of our Worship and Music Ministries take the Sacraments, Holy Communion (consecrated bread and wine) from our 9 AM service, to an assisted living senior residential center in our area. They provide a full Sunday service of worship and music, including a brief sermon, for the residents.
5:00 pm Evensong
On the first Sunday of each month, October through June the uniquely Anglican choral Evensong worship is offered at 5:00 pm. Originating from the monastic hours, the beauty of Evensong are the distinctive parts of Vespers and Compline as set forth by Thomas Cranmer in the Book of Common Prayer, 1549. While the liturgy of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer, the music may vary. Clergy and choir will sing the service, however, the congregation is invited to attend carefully to the texts of the service and to boldly join in singing the designated portions.
