Seniors
Our Senior Ministry provides activities, resources, and pastoral care for mature adults. Special excursions, social gatherings, and informative seminars focus on the physical, emotional, and spiritual well being of Seniors. This Ministry was initiated in October of 2005 through the tireless efforts of the St. Peter’s Seniors Ministry Corporation, and it is anticipated that the activities and resources that are currently being provided to seniors will continue to grow and expand over time.
ACTIVITIES
- In conjunction with our Seniors on the Go program, special day trips are offered on a quarterly basis to plays, musicals, and other events that are being held in the San Diego area. At times, day trips are also planned for the Los Angeles area, such as trips to special museums.
- Group tours of residential retirement communities and other alternative living communities are offered to provide an opportunity for Seniors to visit and look at some possible options for future living arrangements. “Sandwich” generation individuals are also encouraged to take advantage of these tours to help them explore and prepare for future decisions for their loved ones as well as for themselves.
- The Senior Lunch Program is a special offering of a gourmet meal along with fellowship and a special program with a speaker or activity that focuses on the interests and needs of the senior population. Our Senior Lunches are usually held at noon in the Parish Hall on one of the first three Tuesdays of the month. Specific dates and topics for these Lunches are published in the monthly Newsletter, in the weekly Sunday bulletin, and flyers are posted on the Seniors Ministry bulletin board that is located in the North Patio area.
- Special informative seminars geared toward the needs of the Seniors are presented in conjunction with the Senior Lunch Program as well as at other times during the week. Information regarding these are published in the monthly Newsletter, in the weekly Sunday bulletin, and flyers are posted on the Seniors Ministry bulletin board that is located in the North Patio area near the Parish Hall.
- Senior Lunch on April 15 - Come join us on Tuesday, April 15, for our next Senior Lunch beginning at 12:00 Noon in the Parish Hall. Ron Monark will be sharing ideas with us on how to avoid “Going from Rags to Riches” through Planned Giving and other financial opportunities that will benefit future generations at St. Peter’s. Now is the time to plan ahead! Marion Wesson will be heading up the Kitchen Team with a “timely” menu and some very special decorations appropriate to April 15. Please RSVP by April12 at the Seniors Ministry Table on Sundays or at the Office: 858-755-1616, ext. 125.
- An informal fellowship group that serves as the mid-week Coffee Hour meets in the Youth Center each week following the 9:30 AM Wednesday Healing/Holy Eucharist service. Light refreshments are served.
RESOURCES
- The Associate Rector for Senior Ministry serves as the primary resource to the Seniors and their families.
- A Senior Ministry Team meets regularly to identify special needs of seniors and how they might be best met within the framework of the Seniors Ministry.
- On Sundays, a Senior Ministry Table is set up on the Patio for sign-ups for excursions and programs. Current booklets and pamphlets related to the special needs and concerns of Seniors are also provided on the Table.
- Flyers and short articles or notices with information related to activities for Seniors in the local areas are posted on the Seniors Ministry bulletin board that is located in the North Patio area near the Parish Hall.
- The Senior Ministry frequently serves as a clearinghouse to help Seniors and their families obtain specific services within the local area since many of the local and regional agencies already provide many of the services requested.
An ongoing cache of information regarding regional and local agencies and their programs is kept in the Youth Center, which serves as the main headquarters for the Senior Ministry. Materials are also on display in the Library, and these are rotated on a regular basis.
PASTORAL CARE
- The Associate Rector for Senior Ministry and the Chaplain provide Pastoral Care on a needs basis to the seniors and their families. This includes personal home and hospital visits, as well as personal consultations in the office or by phone.
- Since Pastoral Care includes the well being of mind, body, and soul, all of the above listed Activities and Resources are also a part of the Pastoral Care that is available to our Seniors at St. Peter’s.
