Mission

“…Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these…you did it to me…”
                                        Matthew 25:40

Our mission is to show forth Christ’s love to those in need beyond our own parish community, addressing basic human needs for the lost, the least, and the forgotten.

The work of the St. Peter’s Mission Ministry Team involves the development, planning, and implementation of hands-on volunteer projects on a local, national, and international level. These projects consist of both on-going and one time events.

This work is in support of the Episcopal Church’s ONE Campaign to eradicate poverty at home and in the world. This campaign is based on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by all members of the United Nations in 2000. These goals are:

Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Achieve universal primary education
Promote gender equality and empower women
Reduce child Mortality
Improve maternal health
Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
Ensure environmental sustainability
Develop a global partnership for development

The parishioners of St. Peter’s continually give of their time and talents. Each winter, St. Peter’s hosts the Interfaith Shelter. On average, 85 parishioners participate each year in assisting with chaperone and cooking duties.

At Christmas, youth, youth leaders, and other adults assist in sorting food and gifts for the Encinitas Community Resource Center (CRC) Holiday Gift Basket Program. Adult volunteers, the J2A youth group and other Sunday School classes assist in packing bag lunches for the homeless. St. Peter’s distributes over 1000 lunches each year.

Additionally, parishioners assist with the following:

Painting and landscaping of the Esperanza Health Center in Tijuana
Provide meals once per month at Rachel’s Center for Battered Women
Knitting scarves for seniors as part of the CRC Holiday Gift Program
Pick-up and distribution of bread through the CRC Bread Room.

Parishioner Alison Royle continues her outstanding work in support of programs in the Diocese of Namibia. She has raised a significant amount funds through presentations done throughout the Diocese of San Diego. Additionally, she makes trips to Washington, DC in an effort to seek out and establish other sources of funding for such programs as the establishment of a micro-enterprise program for women.

In 2006, 2 trips were made to Camp Coast Care in Long Beach, MS. In August, 5 members of St. Peter’s along with 5 other members of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, spent 7 days assisting with case management and house building along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Over the Christmas Holiday 5 members of St. Peter’s returned to Camp Coast Care, once again assisting with case management and house building. Additionally, we organized the distribution of 1000 toys to 100 families with 350 children. On Christmas Day we prepared dinner for 150 people still living in a FEMA trailer park. At least one more trip is being planned for August, 2007.

In March, 2007 members of St. Peter’s participated in a diocesan mission trip to Maseno, Kenya. This trip was in support of the Episcopal missionaries Drs. Gerry and Nancy Hardison, former members of St. Peter’s.

In 2006, over 70 individuals participated in our American Red Cross Blood Drives. During this time St. Peter’s had a 167% increase in useable pints donated. For this we were given a special award by the San Diego Chapter of the ARC.

The Annual Alternative Christmas Market raises over $7000 each year to support designated programs whose mission is to eradicate poverty and suffering at home and in the world.
