Lent 2013
Lenten Programs at St. Peter's for 2013
Sunday Morning Forums: Feb 24, Mar 3, Mar 10, and Mar 24 at 10:00AM in the Parish HallOur Sunday Lenten Forums will be led by The Rev. Frank Muñoz, LCDR, CHC, USN. Fr. Muñoz is currently the Command Chaplain at the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. Fr. Muñoz will be presenting a 3-part series entitled “Trauma and Spirituality: The Journey to Awakening.” This series will examine how trauma can become a journey to spiritual awakening as it challenges us at the very core of our self and our spirit. Trauma often opens us to spiritual questions and new world views which lead to enlightenment, healing, and wholeness. Through this series, Fr. Muñoz will help us gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of trauma from a clinical and theoretical perspective, and from a theological and spiritual lens for understanding the journey of transformation that can lead to a life of deeper meaning, purpose, and hope.
Wednesday Morning Program: Feb 20, Feb 27, Mar 6, Mar 13, Mar 20, at 10:30AM in the Parish Hall. Our Wednesday Morning Program will be presented by Dr. Elisabeth K. J. Koenig. Dr. Koenig is Professor of Ascetical Theology, Emerita, of General Theological Seminary in New York City, where she taught courses in Christian spirituality, theology, and ethics for twenty-five years. More recently she has served as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego and has been writing articles for a Westminster/John Knox anthology called Feasting on the Gospels. Dr. Koenig will present a 5-part series titled, “Biographies for the Journey Through Lent: Growing from Doubt to Faith.” In this series, we will explore the life stories of Jesus, St. Augustine, Julian of Norwich, Teresa of Avila, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Denise Levertov, plus selections from their sayings and writings, in order to shed light on their deepening spirituality, as well as our own. Special attention will be given to the role of Christian practice in the formation of faith-based courage.
Wednesday Evening Program: Feb 20, Feb 27, Mar 6, Mar 13, Mar 20 beginning at 6:00PM in the Parish Hall. Together we will read and engage Small Things with Great Love: Adventures in Loving Your Neighbor by Margot Starbuck. This book will give us an opportunity to act on our faith commitments by engaging with the world. Often times our Christian commitment seems to large or impossible a task for us. This book will invite us into recognizing that we can have a large impact on the world through small acts of love toward those people with whom we interact on a regular basis. The book is written so that it may be tailored to specific demographics. As is our custom, our Wednesday Evenings will begin with a simple soup supper at 6:00PM followed by a brief presentation and conversation with our fellow parishioners. The evening will conclude with Compline in the church at 8:00PM. Of special note, the author, Margot Starbuck will be with us on March 20, 2013 to speak to us about her book and about our journey through Lent.
